Keeping pupils safe online

Keeping our pupils safe is the number one priority of every member of staff at Glory Farm Primary School.  The information on this page explains some of the strategies we use to help them keep safe when using new technologies.

Internet filtering

School computers connect to the internet through a filtering system designed to protect pupils from accidentally encountering inappropriate material.  However, it is not possible to filter content with 100% accuracy.


When using new technologies, pupils are at risk from three sources:

The best way to protect pupils from these dangers is to educate them; make them aware of the risks, how to avoid them and what to do if they feel worried.  At Glory Farm Primary School, each activity pupils undertake in lessons is closely monitored, and ways of keeping safe, along with potential risks, are explored whenever possible.

What can parents do?

Technology transcends the classroom; a large number of pupils at Glory Farm Primary School have access to the internet at home and nearly all of these have private access to it in their bedrooms, many from mobile phones and games consoles.

Widely used technologies

An important part of this is making parents aware of the technologies we use in lessons.  The quickly evolving nature of technology makes it impossible to provide a comprehensive list of the technologies we use but the list below includes the technologies that are widely used at the moment.

Technology What is it? Example of use
Google Appsgapps Google Apps allows pupils to create and store documents online for free. Documents can be shared online and even worked on simultaneously by multiple pupils. Pupils use Google docs and slides as an alternative to Word and PowerPoint to share with their teacher.
Google Mailmail Google Mail is the school’s email service and allows staff and pupils to communicate with people over the internet. Pupils learn how to send emails to their teacher with attached work.Pupils have a school email address for this purpose. The system is monitored.
Chromechrome Chrome is a web browser similar to Internet Explorer. Pupils use Chrome to access the internet for research purposes and for searching for relevant images to illustrate their work in applications such as Publisher and PowerPoint

New Technologies Code of Conduct

The rules below are for pupil protection and the protection of other members of our school community.  This code of conduct is also recommended for out of school hours.  The code of conduct is not intended to be exhaustive and at all times pupils should use the internet in an appropriate and responsible manner.  Pupils are reminded of this code of conduct when using computers.

By agreeing to this code pupils are agreeing to:


  1.  Report any upsetting or inappropriate material you find online to a trusted adult.
  2.  Only access sites that are suitable for use in school.
  3.  Respect copyright and trademarks.  You cannot use the words or pictures that you see on an internet site without giving credit to the person that owns the site.  You must not copy text or pictures from the internet and hand it to your teacher as your own work.


  1.  Don’t tell other people your school password or your Google password (although you can tell your parents).
  2.  Be respectful at all times.  Never write anything that could be seen as rude or upsetting.  If in doubt, check with a trusted adult.
  3.  Never post personal information like your address, phone number, personal email address or pictures of yourself online.
  4.  Understand that information you post online is public and permanent.  Posting inappropriate or upsetting material will damage your online reputation and could lead you to being disciplined by school or the police.


  1.  Tell a trusted adult if you are contacted by anyone who is not at Glory Farm Primary School.
  2.  Report any negative comments you receive online to a trusted adult.
  3. Never meet in the real world with someone you have only met online.
  4. Always use your school email address when contacting your teacher about school work.

User areas on the school network will be monitored whilst pupils are using computers, and staff may review pupil files and communications to maintain system integrity and pupil safety.
